David McNarry MLA, UKIP Leader in Northern Ireland, has welcomed promises made to reduce sugar levels in drinks by 2020.

He said :

“It is a victory for both myself and others who campaigned for a sugar tax. Pepsi and others are to slash sugar content by 20% by 2020. Pepsi and Britvic will also be axing billboards near schools and will ban TV adverts aimed at children. Kellogg’s committed to cutting more than 723 tons of sugar from its cereals in 2017, including Frosties and Coco Pops.

“With successes like this behind us, we must not rest on our laurels or retreat. A Sugar Tax could raise £1 billion pounds each year. We must press for further and greater reductions especially as 10 Downing Street will be circulating their plans for sugar reductions in the coming week. People should lobby Number 10 to make sure it is bold enough in its demands.”
